Halloween Horror Movie Madness 2014 - Attack Of The Automatons: Week Four Recap (FINAL WEEK!)

Well, the final week of Halloween Horror Movie Marathon Madness 2014 is over (for more on what it is, see my recap of Week 1)... Halloween 2014 has come and gone, and boy, did I watch a lot of films this month (I think my final total for October was 76 movies)... Anyhow, I had a lot of fun participating this year - though the amount of Charles Band-related films I watched kind of hurts my brain - and I'm glad that I gave it a shot.

All of the below were watched over the past week... Scores (out of 5) for each title are included, along with points.

The Walking Dead - Season 5 - Episode 3 (4/5)
Another solid episode. This season is moving along nicely. Still early, but might be the best one yet...
Points: 1 (Base) = 1 point

Garfield's Halloween Adventure (3/5)
This is a tradition in our house on Halloween night. My son loves it, and he sings along.
Points: .5 (Base) = .5 points

Will Vinton's Comedy of Horrors (3/5)
I still like the Christmas special better (nostalgia), but this lesser-known Halloween special is still a bunch of fun. It's goofy, but perfect to watch on Halloween.
Points: .5 (Base) + .5 (Claymation/Stop Motion) = 1 point

Assorted Movies

Dolly Dearest (3.5/5)
Oh boy, do I love this film. It's not great, but it holds up very well as a rip-off of THE EXORCIST and CHILD'S PLAY. It's actually one of the creepier killer doll films; probably because of the way the possessed doll looks at times.
Points: 2 (Base) + ATB (Doll killing people) = 6 points

Magic (3.5/5)
First time I've seen this one, and it wasn't quite what I expected. However, I quite liked the psychological thriller aspect of it, and Anthony Hopkins was great. He even had hair still!
Points: 2 (Base) + 1 (Practical Puppetry) = 3 points

Squirm (3/5)
Killer worms? Really? Yeah, it's goofy, but it wasn't meant to be taken seriously.
Points: 2 (Base) = 2 points

Ooga Booga (1/5)
Ugh... More Charles Band nonsense... This time, it's a murdered black medical student who finds his soul inhabiting a racist doll that looks like some caricature of a native tribesman. It's bad, and for an "urban" horror film, why are there only 2 black people?! Oh well, the girl is hot, and she gets naked... I guess we have to take what we can get...
Points: 2 (Base) + ATB (Doll killing people) = 6 points

Attack Of The Puppet People (2/5)
AIP rip-off of THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN... Lonely puppeteer/scientist turns a bunch of people into tiny doll-sized companions. I don't know why it's called "Attack Of..." since they don't really attack; at least not anyone that doesn't deserve it... It's pretty cheesy, but watchable. And laughable.
Points: 2 (Base) + 1 (People being shrunk) + 1 (Practical Scale sets) + 1 (Practical puppetry in one brief scene) = 5 points

Tales From The Hood (4/5)
A long-time favorite of mine. This is "urban" horror done right. It's a great anthology, and of course, the best segment is the one with the killer slave dolls. Still creepy as fuck.
Points: 2 (Base) + ATB (Dolls killing people and eating them) = 6 points

Devil Doll (2.5/5)
Imagine if Benedict Cumberbatch played a rapey hypnotist with a mustache who trapped peoples' souls in dolls and then used them as a magic act. Oh, and the main doll also murders people. It's not good, but it's far from the worst... It kind of felt like a longer-than-necessary TWILIGHT ZONE episode.
Points: 2 (Base) + ATB (Doll killing people) = 6 points

Halloween (5/5)
Fucking classic.
Points: 2 (Base) = 2 points

Halloween 2 (3.5/5)
Not as good as the first, obviously, but not as bad as a lot of people say.
Points: 2 (Base) = 2 points

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (4/5)
I love this movie. In fact, it's my second-favorite of the series. I kind of wish they had done more without Michael...
Points: 2 (Base) = 2 points

Halloween 4 (2.5/5)
I still don't get why people love this movie. It's not good. Michael looks like shit... I guess Danielle Harris and the girl who plays her step-sister are good here; but that's about all.
Points: 2 (Base) = 2 points

Halloween 5 (2/5)
Ugh. These just get worse... That ending... SO BAD.
Points: 2 (Base) = 2 points

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1.5/5)
Not the Producer's Cut (though that is very overrated). It's a shitty film out and out.
Points: 2 (Base) = 2 points

The Nightmare Before Christmas (5/5)
Oh, how I love this... I actually took my 3-year-old son to see it on Halloween at the theater. It's his favorite movie, and this was his first time ever going to a movie theater. He loved seeing it on a big screen... I think this was my 6th time seeing it theatrically. I have loved it ever since I saw it on October 31, 1993 with my parents.
Points: 2 (Base) + ATB (Toys attacking people) = 6 points

Trick 'r Treat (5/5)
To me, this movie defines Halloween. Since 2009, I have watched it every Halloween night. So fucking wonderful.
Points: 2 (Base) + 1 (Practical puppetry used for some effects w/ Sam) = 3 points

The Blob [1988] (5/5)
One of the best remakes ever. Watched on Blu-ray (finally) and loved it just as much as I did as a kid.
Points: 2 (Base) = 2 points

Total Points For Week Four

88 points
