...But then again, we already knew that would be the case, right?
When it comes to Collector's Edition Blu-ray releases of classic 80's horror films, Scream Factory has been kicking ass and taking names for a while now. The company always delivers a quality product with awesome artwork, great transfers, and for their Collector's Edition discs, a wealth of bonus content; something that has been increasingly lacking in the majority of new studio releases.
These are all reasons why I was stoked to hear that they had acquired the rights to release the original SLEEPAWAY CAMP several months back. In fact, as fate would have it, that announcement came while we were deep into our SLEEPAWAY CAMP Retrospective Series over at the Dead Air Podcast (you can find those episodes for listening/download HERE). The big question was, "What will the new artwork look like?"
Well, as you can see from the picture above, it's pretty bad-ass. Much like their amazing artwork for last year's Blu-ray release of THE BURNING (which is probably my favorite slasher film), Nathan Thomas Milliner's take on SLEEPAWAY CAMP makes the woods run red with blood.
Like THE BURNING, I believe that Scream Factory will be sending folks who pre-order the disc directly through their website a limited edition 18″ x 24″ poster of the artwork. If you ask me, the two posters would look great next to one another. Preorders haven't gone up yet, but we'll share that info here when we get it.
No Bonus Features have been officially announced yet, either. However, because it's a Collector's Edition, I'd wager that we'll get a commentary track (maybe even two, if they include the old Anchor Bay release special features) along with some interviews and featurettes. These are pretty standard for Scream Factory releases, and they are always great. Hell, I'd love a "retrospective"-type feature, and if Scream Factory does eventually get the rights to SLEEPAWAY CAMP II and III, it would be cool to have that for all of them. Again, this is all wishing and speculating.
One thing we will get for sure, though, is the original artwork on the reverse side of the cover; another reason that I love this company. In case you can't remember the iconic poster art from the film's original release, it's included here.
SLEEPAWAY CAMP comes to Blu-ray/DVD on May 27th, 2014.
